Soft pastel has been part of my artistic journey since my earliest years of drawing and painting. Alongside graphite pencils, sketchpads, wax crayons, and watercolor, I vividly remember receiving a box of Grumbacher soft pastels as a gift sometime in the 1980s. At a time when quality art materials were difficult to find and available from only a single art supply store, that modest box opened an entirely new world of artistic possibilities. Looking back, it was one of those defining moments that deepened my fascination with the visual arts and eventually shaped the direction of my practice.

Years later, I found myself with the opportunity to once again organize an exhibition that began several years ago. Now in its fourth edition, PASTELERO IV was conceived as a celebration of excellence in soft pastel—a medium that, despite its remarkable versatility and expressive potential, continues to deserve greater recognition within Philippine fine art.

Beyond showcasing outstanding works, the exhibition reflects a belief that art has the power to foster camaraderie and meaningful friendships. Rather than being limited by affiliations or organizations, the participating artists were invited solely on the strength of their work and their commitment to the pastel medium. While many artists have explored pastel at some point in their careers, only a select few have truly embraced it as a significant part of their practice. PASTELERO IV brings together these dedicated pastelists, each presenting work that represents their finest efforts.

Participating artists in PASTELERO IV are Alvin Montano, Brian Alegre, Buds Convocar, Cee Cadid, Dennis Baquial, Des Inosanto, Gigi Manalastas, Glenn Perez, Grandier Bella, Iris Babao-Uy, Mary Irma Lara, Joseph Balderas, Karlo Domingo, Levy Moncera, Lita Wells, Lupicinio Ng, Manny Vailoces, Mario Panis, Marj Sula-Aquino, Moyo Montes, Nell Belgado, Nik Masangcay, Robert Deniega, Roberto Martin Sing, Romeo Cortez, Romina Dayanghirang, Tess Torda, and Tessa Brodeth.

It is my hope that PASTELERO IV not only highlights the extraordinary possibilities of soft pastel, but also inspires more artists and collectors to discover the richness, beauty, and enduring appeal of this remarkable medium.
